About Counselling and Psychotherapy

What are Counselling and Psychotherapy for?

Many people find such confidential ‘talking therapies’ help them to explore the concerns and challenges in their lives in a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment. It is not about me giving advice or the answers but being both supportive and gently challenging as we explore your difficulties together. This can lead to understanding any unhelpful patterns of behaviour and finding alternative options that can facilitate change.

What’s the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

There is not a clear distinction between counselling and psychotherapy, but in general, counselling is shorter-term and deals with the more transient problems in life, whilst psychotherapy is longer-term for resolving more deeply-rooted difficulties in relating to others and the world around us.

How long does it take?

There is no fixed time scale – it is decided by you depending on the sort of changes you want to make. Some clients come to therapy for a matter of weeks, others several years. Ultimately it is up to you, and we have regular reviews to ensure that you are gaining what you want from the therapy.
